Biotechnology Company Launch New Seaweed Product
4 August 2008

Leader for the Government in the Legislative Council, Doug Parkinson, today launched an innovative new gardening product.

Biotechnology company Marinova received a government grant to help develop a waste recovery system to convert seaweed by-products into a functional soil additive.

“This innovative new product is the result of Marinova’s commercialisation acumen and state government support,” Mr Parkinson said.

“Marinova have developed a waste-recovery system to convert seaweed by-products into a functional soil additive, the new SeaGreens potting mix.

“This potting mix has been developed in collaboration with Tasmania’s largest potting mix manufacturer, Horticultural and Landscape Supplies.

“This is an excellent outcome as previously Marinova was dumping its waste products at the Mornington and Triabunna tips which was both costly to the company and a waste of potentially nutrient-rich additives.”

Mr Parkinson said Marinova was a great example of a highly innovative and specialised biotechnology business, an emerging sector in Tasmania.

“There are strong indicators that Tasmania offers a unique set of opportunities for biotechnology to become one of our leading industries,” Mr Parkinson said.

“To further promote development in the sector, the government has established a 10 year biotechnology strategy after extensive stakeholder consultation.

“Launched in June 2007, BioVision Tasmania identified eight key challenges that need to be addressed to grow the industry.

“These challenges included access to capital, collaborative research opportunities, access to sophisticated equipment and infrastructure, and access to specialist business skills.

“Representatives of the industry, including Marinova, recently undertook a trade mission to BIO 2008, the world’s largest biotechnology convention , with over 22 000 participants.”
